One of many troubles when discussing road safety is people hesitant to admit their own faults. People will complain about the negligence of other drivers without thinking if they drive safely themselves. The apparent benefits to driving safely include low car insurance rates and no physical damage. Allow me to share some simple tips to follow that can help keep you accident free on the road.

The primary two crucial elements that contribute to accidents on the road are speed and distance. It’s evident that driving too fast will result in an accident at some point. However, the circumstances of the place you speed could have you or others in mortal danger. We already have legal speed limits that we have to follow, but many drivers do not adjust to the ever changing driving conditions throughout the day. As an example, you may well actually do some speeding on the open road if there aren’t any cars in sight. However, if the weather transforms to snowy or rainy, you will have to drive slower and safer.

Thus if we accept that speed is something we need to assess based on road conditions, then what about distance? There are guidelines set up that state how much distance we need to keep between ourselves and the car in front and yet you see so many drivers who seem fascinated by the rear of the vehicle before them. There are people who do this without thinking and there are other people who do it because they are in a rush. There’s a false impression that tailgating the car or truck in front of you will get you anyplace faster. When you do this and the car in front of you experiences a blowout or perhaps brakes hard suddenly, you will probably not have enough room to avoid an accident.

Many people have a tendency to not pay attention to the condition of their car. Performing regular car maintenance is a significant part of car safety. If you look after your tires and brakes, they likely will be effective during perilous situations. Vehicle maintenance can be expensive so you need to make sure you budget each month for it. Get the Extended Auto Warranty, it’s worth it!

If you’re accommodating and cautious on the road, then you will keep yourself and others from getting hurt. Actually, we went back and forth about what would be best to discuss on the topic of auto extended warranty.

So what we did was try to break things up as well as possible, and we have written other articles about this.

We recommend that you perform research at applicable authority sites that are known for being reputable and credible.

Everything you can find out will be of service to you in some way, and maybe that will be in the far off future; but that is all right. Once you do that, then you will be more confident about your choices. Don’t forget, that when you are in a car, the most important thing is always to arrive at your destination safely. It is very important that you concentrate on your driving and cut down on distractions such as eating on the go or trying to read something casually. If you try these tips, you can have a safer driving experience.

Search Engine Optimization, though an integral part of developing a complete web presence, is something that’s often overlooked by both web design companies and their clients alike. This article is meant to serve as an introduction to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and it will be followed with a 2nd article which contains a basic primer on how to go about properly optimizing a site. My intended audience for this first article is the savvy consumer who is trying to educate himself or herself, and the follow-up article will endeavor to help those design/development firms who are only just breaking into the world of SEO.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the process of increasing a site’s ranking on search engines such as Google, Yahoo, or MSN. Ideally, you want your business to appear as the first result to someone who is searching for a product or service you provide to your customers. For example, if you own a vegetarian restaurant in Philadelphia, it would significantly increase your restaurant’s exposure if your website were the first result for “vegetarian restaurant Philadelphia” on Google. This type of positioning is the goal of search engine optimization.

Organic Results vs. Paid Results

It is important to understand the difference between organic search results and paid search results. Organic search results are selected and positioned by the search engine itself, with no external bias toward one site over another. With organic searching, the order of results is determined exclusively by the relevance of the site to the user’s specific query, as determined by the search engine’s internal algorithms. Search engine optimization endeavors to “educate” the search engine about a site so that the site will be seen as relevant for certain queries, and therefore given better positioning in the results. This “most relevant site first” method of ordering search results is in sharp contrast to pay-per-click, in which the highest bidder for a given search query is given preference. However, pay-per-click results are generally shown on separate parts of the screen from the main organic results, usually at the top of the window or in a sidebar labeled “sponsored links”. Although there are compelling reasons to launch a pay-per-click campaign as part of your online marketing plan, this article focuses exclusively on organic search optimization.

Won’t the search engines just find my site on their own?

Modern search engines are very adept at crawling the web and creating a comprehensive index that contains every website they come across. However, the algorithms used by search engines take into account many different factors when determining where to position a site, and if your site doesn’t measure up when it comes to some of the more important factors, you will end up buried among thousands or millions of other sites.

Search engines have one goal: to return the most relevant results to a user’s query in order to help them find what they are looking for. Why is it, then, that if you do in fact own a vegetarian restaurant in Philadelphia, your website can still get buried on page 29 for the exact query “vegetarian restaurant in Philadelphia”? One reason for this apparent discrepancy is that search engines don’t view websites the way a person does. When a search engine downloads a web page, it sees only the markup code that was used to create the site – it doesn’t see visual elements like graphics or page layout. If the site hasn’t been optimized, more often than not, the search engine’s back-end view of the site offers little indication of what content is important and what the primary focus of the site is. These search engine “spiders” – the algorithms that do the actual searching and indexing – can make a good guess as to what the site is about, but without a clear understanding of why it would be a great result for a specific search query, the site will end up in a mediocre position at best.

Another reason sites receive a poor ranking is that they simply don’t appear to be very important to the grand scheme of the Internet. Search engines are trying to return the most useful results to their users, so if your content appears to be of little value, and if no other sites on the web are linking back to yours, your site is going to be very poorly positioned. One way to combat this problem is to work to build inbound links, which are links to your site from other sites. This can be accomplished by submitting your site to online directories, participating in forum discussions or blog discussions relevant to your site and including a link back, or by marketing the site via press releases or external product reviews (where applicable). Inbound links, however, aren’t the whole story, and it takes a comprehensive SEO plan to ensure long term, first page positioning, especially in competitive markets.

Why didn’t my web designer optimize my site when he built it?

There is a common misconception that search optimization is simply a matter of altering the design of the site or adding a few keywords to the content, and that such SEO-related tasks should be handled by the web designer prior to the site launch. While it’s true that there are design elements that need to be addressed when optimizing a site, SEO is, in many ways, a marketing effort rather than a technical one. The optimization process involves tasks such as copywriting and press release distribution, which fall well outside the technical realm of web development. In the end, SEO is an entirely separate product and process from the actual web design, and it needs to be treated (and budgeted) as such.

Recall what I said earlier regarding search engines evaluating the overall importance of your site in order to determine its search positioning. Much like a print campaign or TV ad, your goal on the web is to increase brand awareness, because it gives a sense of stability and competitive importance to your company, and it creates a connection between the company and your customers. The idea of brand awareness is well understood and sought after in the marketing world, but it often becomes diluted when crossing over to the web, sometimes to the point of being tacked on as an afterthought to the development of a company website. SEO should, conversely, be considered an integral part of any marketing plan, and should be budgeted and managed separately from web design and development.

Who can optimize my site?

In the world of SEO, it’s very easy to find companies who are essentially selling snake oil. Oftentimes, these companies offer little more than “directory submission”, which, while it is a piece of the SEO puzzle when done correctly, may not affect your positioning at all when done incorrectly (in some cases, it can actually hurt your positioning). Choosing the right SEO firm can be tricky, but Google has a page dedicated to the most important things to consider when choosing an SEO company. You can find that page here: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35291

To add to what Google has suggested on that page, it’s important that the SEO firm you choose offers a plan that is tailored specifically for your website. If their plan seems instead to consist of generic link building and indiscriminate directory submission, it’s likely that you won’t see the kind of results you would ideally expect (if you see any results at all). The SEO company should take the time to detail individual changes to each page of your site, and should suggest new pages to be added. Additionally, any good SEO firm will be able to not only provide analytics and metrics, but will also be able to explain the data’s significance within the context of your specific website.

Conclusion

Search engine optimization should be considered an integral part of developing your company’s web presence, but it’s important to remember that SEO effectively crosses the boundary between technical process and marketing endeavor, so it needs to be managed and budgeted as an independent project, rather than being tacked on as part of the general site design. If your web development company doesn’t offer comprehensive and developed SEO services, it is important to hire a separate SEO firm and facilitate ongoing cooperation between the two companies.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising has quickly become one of the most used advertising methods in internet marketing (iMarketing) today. The popularity has grown due to the strength, power, and cost flexibility that PPC advertising offers to an internet marketer.

PPC Overview

PPC advertising can be described as an online advertising method in which a marketer places an advertisement and pays a specified amount each time that a visitor clicks on the advertisement. Available in both text and image formats, PPC ads can be easily set-up, customized, and revised by any marketer with even basic computer and internet skills.

The internet giant, Google.com, was built upon the PPC advertising concept and today generates its revenue through small, sidebar advertisements on its search pages. Each search result page generally consists of natural search results and paid advertisements (PPC ads) that are located along the right-hand side of the page.

Each PPC advertisement consists of an ad title, ad text, and a clickable web link. The placement of each ad is ordered according to the search engine company. Some search engines rank ads only on Cost-Per-Click (CPC) value (from highest to lowest). Others use complex, multi-criteria optimization algorithms to calculate a ranking of each ad.

Ads are triggered only when specified keywords are searched for by a user. Keyword-based search allows for further customizing by advertisers. In general, advertisers would like to find least competitive keywords to assure maximum ad exposure at the lowest possible cost. The other end of the spectrum involves bidding on highly competitive keywords. This situation requires a much higher CPC to be specified in order to still achieve an acceptable ad placement.

How to Get Started

Getting started in PPC advertising is easy and can be accomplished for only dollars out of your pocket. The steps include completing a registration form with your most basic personal information such as name, address, phone, business information, and a credit card. The most popular PPC advertising venues are Google Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing, and MSN AdCenter.

After you’ve registered with a PPC advertising company, you’re within minutes of placing your first ad campaign. An ad campaign is defined as a paid advertisement that is set-up with specific ad criteria such as the ad title, ad text, destination URL, display URL, keywords, and specified CPC.

Additional ad campaign criteria may be specified depending on the PPC advertising company. Some offer national, regional, or local advertising options to limit your ad to be seen only by users in the requested areas. Other options may include targeting your ads to specific sites or ad networks.

Most PPC advertising companies provide detailed written instructions for both sign-up and for setting up your advertising campaigns. Some even offer step-by-step video tutorials to assist you.

Campaign Basics

There are six basic items that an internet marketer must understand in order to set-up any PPC advertising campaign:

•	Title •	Ad text •	Destination URL •	Display URL •	Keywords •	Maximum Cost-Per-Click (CPC)

The title is the main header (first line) of the PPC text ad. You want to use this line to grab the attention of people who see your ad. The title must draw attention to the ad in a way that gets the reader to read the ad text. Keeping a common theme between keywords and related titles is important to drive ad relevance. Some PPC companies allow the use of wildcards to automatically place keywords into ad titles.

Ad text can be described as the body of your text ad. Most companies will limit your ad text to a maximum number of characters per line. Google Adwords, for instance, limits you to 35 characters on the first and second ad text lines, respectively. Now that you’ve captured the attention of someone with your title, you want to use your ad text to intrigue them even more so that they’ll click your link to visit your site.

Display URL is the web address that is shown in your text ad. This is the URL that the user will see. The destination URL is the actual web address that the potential customer will be sent to when they click on your text ad.

Most companies will require that your destination URL be the same as your display URL to keep you from ‘bait & switching’ a potential customer. You are typically allowed to display the root URL to your website and then send a person to a subpage of your site.

For example, the following is typically allowed for display and destination URL’s:

Display URL: http://www.YourSite.com Destination URL: http://www.YourSite.com/PageName.html

This is considered an acceptable shortening of the URL since the root of the destination URL is used for display. Typical techniques such as URL cloaking or web page redirects are not acceptable methods for PPC advertising.

One of the most important aspects of campaign set-up is the selection of your keywords. Developing your keyword strategy will ultimately determine the success or failure of your PPC advertising campaign. Many keyword tool generating tools exist in the marketplace today. The main PPC advertising companies each offer a form of a keyword suggestion tool to assist you in identifying keyword terms.

The last piece of information that you will have to specify to complete your campaign set-up is your maximum CPC. The higher the value you set as your maximum CPC, the more exposure that your CPC ad will receive. Typically, with a higher CPC you’ll also experience a higher rate of clicks. However, CPC is only one factor of many (i.e. headline, ad copy, etc) that will affect your actual click rate.

This article has been prepared by Tug. Tug, is a Search Engine Marketing specialist agency, based in Shoreditch, London.

Search Engines have evolved into a new consumer, communications and marketing channel. Google, Yahoo and MSN serve 213 million searches a day.

In fact, 9 out of 10 internet surfers use a Search Engine to start their internet journey. Therefore, if your website doesn’t have visibility in the engines, you are missing significant volumes of traffic.

Natural vs. Paid for Listings

There are essentially two listings within a Search Engine Results Page (SERP): the Natural listings (on the left) and the Paid for listing (on top and on the right).

Natural listings are the results the engine believes to be the most relevant sites to your search. The natural listings consistently receive over 70% of consumer clicks. Paid for listings are the ads served by Advertisers, who have bid on the term searched for by the consumer.

The Natural listings therefore list all available websites in the World Wide Web, while the Paid for listings only serve links by relevant Advertisers willing to pay for their spot, and thus high visibility in the engines.

To increase Reach, advertisers can pay for ads on the Search Engines themselves, as well as their local listings, mobile listings and their Content Network of websites.

Pay per Click (PPC). Pay only for Visitors

Unlike other marketing channels where you pay for the number of people who see your ad, in pay per click advertising (PPC) you only pay when someone clicks on your ads and is driven through to your site.

•	75% of users search for goods and services through a Search Engine.

•	PPC has the lowest cost per lead compared to other Direct Marketing methods.

•	Pay per click advertising is relevant to what the individual is searching for – targeting them at the right moment and mood.

•	Pay per click is 100% accountable.

•	Advertisers can know the cost of each conversion in real-time, and campaigns can be instantly optimised for maximum ROI.

To get visibility in the paid for listings you can set up a PPC campaign for your website yourself, or by commissioning a specialist Search Engine Marketing agency like Tug.

To get visibility in the Natural listings you need to optimise your website – this is called Search Engine Optimisation. Again this is where you need to commission a specialist agency like Tug.

What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?

Search engine Optimisation, or SEO as it’s commonly known as, is an online marketing strategy that involves designing, writing and coding your entire website with the intention of enabling search engines to index your site easily and efficiently. The sole aim and objective is for it to rank higher for keywords relevant to your business. Optimising a website is critical to gaining visibility on the organic or natural (left hand side) search results (SERP’s) of search engines.

SEO, is done in two stages, known primarily as on page and off page. On page involves the website itself and fundamentally evolves around the design, build and copy laid out within the actual site. Off page relates to ongoing SEO development and includes link building campaigns, news and article submissions, paid directory submissions and joining discussion forums that relate to your chosen industry. The latter is basically about gaining 3rd party exposure of your website.

On Page Factors

•	Keyword mining

•	Keyword density checks

•	Credible copywriting

•	Meta tags scripting

•	Clean and valid mark-up (HTML)

•	Link management

Off Page Factors

•	Free / paid directory submission

•	Article and news submission

•	Press release distribution

•	Reciprocal link marketing

•	Inbound link building

•	Digital signatures

Using Search Engine Marketing to meet your Communication Objectives

Consumers using a Search Engine are primarily in two sets of mind: ‘Research’ mode and ‘Ready to act/buy/sign up’ mode. From a marketer’s point of view they are at different stages of the Purchase Cycle.

PPC campaigns should be set up with this in mind. Different campaigns can be geared for different objectives – for example one for Awareness and one for Sales. The Awareness campaign should be optimized for Reach, concentrating on the highest number of clicks at the cheapest possible price. The Sales campaign conversely should be optimized for sales volume and cheapest Cost per Acquisition (CPA).

Search Engine Optimisation will primarily meet your Awareness and Traffic objectives, as the campaign usually concentrates on fewer, broader keyterms. But keep in mind that this broader Search might ultimately lead to a sale as the Searcher moves through the Purchase Cycle. Remember to optimize your Meta Descriptions (the description in the SERP) with the consumer in mind.

Search Engine Marketing Case Studies:

Search Engine Optimisation Case Study: UK Business Properties. http://ukbusinessproperties.com

Problem

•	UK Business Properties launched a new Commercial Property directory in 2006

•	While the agency that built the site assured them it was SEO friendly, they were languishing on page 3 on Google for the most important keyword: ‘Commercial Property’

Solution

•	Tug developed an SEO strategy that emphasised the keyword ‘Commercial Property’

•	Review and editing of website content – addition of content pages for all UK regions

•	Review and editing of Meta

•	Review and editing of code to make more spider friendly

•	Directory and site map submission

•	A bespoke link building campaign where we submitted to directories, article websites and actively exchange links with high PageRank sites in parallel business verticals

Results

•	Within 6 weeks the website was listed #3 on Page 1 of Google.co.uk

•	The keyword ‘Commercial Property’ now drives 65% of traffic to the site

•	They are now #1 on Google and we are now optimising and link building for new relevant keywords

Pay per Click Case Study: Truffle Shuffle http://www.truffleshuffle.co.uk

Problem

•	Truffle Shuffle is an online retailer competing in a tight margin business, against small t-shirt retailers and huge online retailers like ASOS.

Solution

•	PPC campaign on Google and Yahoo.

•	Avoid Broad keywords even if they can drive sales volume.

•	Use only very specific product related keywords.

•	Use bid management software to set strict Position and ROI rules.

•	Develop specific, relevant ad Creative for every available t-shirt.

•	Weekly coordination with PR efforts.

•	Concentrate only on keywords that convert under £5.25.

•	Measure revenue and work with exact margins to measure profit on every keyword weekly.

Results

•	In November 07, Tug drove 1,949 sales (1 or more t-shirts) at an average cost per conversion of £1.39.

•	We delivered a 24:1 ROI (revenue generated/ad spend).

Google Adwords is far and away the most popular PPC advertising platform on the internet. The reasons for this are simple: a well designed user interface, a large number and variety of publishers to show the ads and, most importantly, a long history of positive ROI rates for advertisers. Adwords can be intimidating to new users, but it really isn’t very difficult to learn the skills you need to get started.

This article is meant to be a basic introduction to Adwords. So if you are already very familiar with it, this might be review. The first problem most people have with Adwords is setting to and sticking with a budget. Most people get frustrated because they haven’t bid enough for their clicks, resulting in their ads having a low position. After a couple days of poor results, most new advertisers quickly increase their bids and the results is a pile of expensive traffic that brings back little, if any, return. When you make your Adwords account, set a small budget. Use keyword tools (many of which are available on the links page of this website) to determine which searches are most popular and try to find searches that other advertisers haven’t thought of. This is the best way of getting cheap traffic to your website(s), since less competition means lower cost per click.

However, cheap traffic is not necessarily good traffic. Let me repeat that again, just because you are getting cheap clicks from Adwords does not mean you are using your advertising dollars effectively. Targeted traffic is the key. If your website is selling software tutorials and you bid on phrases such as “free software” or “download photoshop” you might very well get many, many visitors (very inexpensively), but I can guarantee that your conversion rate (sales/visitor) will be horrible. Even key phrases like “free tutorials” will fail to create a positive return. Generally, never use the word “free” in your ads, unless you are actually giving something away for free. Users will click, costing you money, but are almost never interested in shelling out cash for a product.

Conversely, using key phrases with the words “buy” or “purchase” will decrease the number of clicks you receive, but will certainly increase your conversion rate and ROI. Going back to my previous example, bidding on key phrases such as “buy dreamweaver tutorials”or “professional photoshop tutorials” will give you visitors that are interested in buying the product you are selling and willing to spend money if your product matches their needs. In my next article on Adwords, I will discuss strategies to write high quality ads to help improve your click through and conversion rates.
